Using original and archive footage and covering over fifteen years as a group, Pansy Division: Life in a Gay Rock Band is a fast-paced, intimate and humorous account of one of rock's most fearless acts. From their first days in San Francisco's underground music scene to a full-fledged stadium tour with Green Day and beyond, founding members Jon Ginoli and Chris Freeman overcome increasingly difficult line-up changes, prejudice and near-poverty to keep the band together and create music that has truly made a difference.

Positive Force: More Than a Witness - 30 Years of Punk Politics in Action

Punk activist collective Positive Force emerged in 1985, rising from the ashes of Revolution Summer. This feature-length film by Robin Bell skillfully mixes rare archival footage (including electrifying live performances from Fugazi, Bikini Kill, Nation of Ulysses, Anti-Flag, and more) with new interviews with key PF activists like co-founder Mark Andersen and supporters such as Ian MacKaye, Ted Leo, and Riot Grrrl co-founder Allison Wolfe. Covering a span of 25 years, More Than A Witness documents PF's Reagan-era origins, the creation of its communal house, FBI harassment, and the rise of a vibrant underground that burst into the mainstream amidst controversy over both the means and the ends of the movement. In the best punk fashion, PF volunteers have applied creative DIY tactics and radical critiques to issues of homelessness, racism, corporate globalization, sexism, and war while struggling to constructively address conflicting dynamics and visions within the group itself.

Hell Nation - The Story of Dead Kennedys

On July the 19th, 1978, the Dead Kennedys would play their first show at the Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco, California. This venue, also known as The Fab Mab was somewhat of a legendary venue. It saw the likes of The Runaways, Ramones, The Dead Boys and even Motorhead stretch their strings there. So what better place for the Dead Kennedys to launch their assault onto the world. The Dead Kennedys would be formed through The Recycler. A now legendary newspaper that brought many influential groups together. Metallica, Guns N Roses and Motley Crue all started from classified ads here. Whilst of course the Kennedys were a full band, one man would essentially become the spokesperson for the group and his name would become synonymous with them. You can’t hear the name Jello Biafra without thinking of the politics behind Dead Kennedys.

The Color of Noise
7.3

The Color of Noise is a full length documentary about the Artist Haze XXL (Tom Hazelmyer) and his notorious record label, Amphetamine Reptile Records. Throughout the 80's and 90's the label would achieve almost cult like status for being adventurous and daring in the midst of a time where "safe" punk rock would rule the airwaves with a newly accepted style of music by the mainstream college goers, Grunge. Though with AmRep, not only a roster of the most outrageous performers would find a home, but also a legion of poster artists who broke all of the rules. Armed with a computer and an aesthetic of bold imagery, an artist would emerge in Hazelmyer. This is an American mid-west story about a man who created his own path, far from the norm and how he brought along with him countless others who would achieve greatness by sheer proximity and participation. This is the true American underground.
