The card featured many future superstars such as Jason "The Punisher" Lambert, Nate Diaz, Brad Imes, Chris "Lights Out" Lytle, "The Sandman" James Irvin, Joe "Diesel" Riggs, Chael Sonnen, and MMA legend "Mr. International" Shonie Carter. The main event saw Doug Marshall take on Carlos Garcia.

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva will face Chael Sonnen in a boxing match on June 15 in Brazil, Spaten Fight Night promotion announced. Silva, 49, had been teasing his career finale, claiming his final fight would take placein his birthplace of Sao Paulo.

This was Gracie's first match in the UFC and in the United States since UFC 5.

UFC 98: Evans vs. Machida was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on May 23, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Quinton Jackson, former UFC Light Heavyweight champion, was to fight the undefeated current champion Rashad Evans but had to undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair ligament damage in his jaw that he received in a previous training camp. Instead, Evans headlined the card against fellow undefeated contender Lyoto Machida.

Bellator 180: Sonnen vs. Silva and Bellator 180 took place on June 24, 2017, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event aired both Spike TV and on PPV. A grudge match between rivals Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva served as the main event. The co-main event was a heavyweight bout between Fedor Emelianenko vs. Matt Mitrione. The pairing were supposed to meet at Bellator 172 but Mitrione had to be hospitalized due to kidney stones.
