In January 1810 in Edo, Kikunosuke, the 17-year-old-son of a murdered samurai, takes revenge on his father's murderer, Sakubai, who was his father's former retainer. Kikunosuke gloriously defeats the swaggering Sakubai in single combat in front of a theater, witnessed by a huge audience that had just finished watching a production of 47 Ronin. With Sakubai's severed head, Kikunosuke has achieved his revenge and ensured that his family won't be exiled. 18 months later, a ronin named Soichiro Kase from Kikunosuke's domain arrives at the theater. While he seems silly and smooth-talking, he's very keen on finding out more about the incident and Kikunosuke's time working at the theater. The theater's staff – the barker Ippachi, the swordsmanship teacher Sagara, the costumer Hotaru, the craftsman Kyuzo, and the playwright Kinji – are apprehensive and suspicious at his digging. However, not everything is as it seems.

During the Sengoku period, villagers brutally killed eight samurai, and in the Taisho era, the head of an old family murdered 32 villagers in the Eight-Tomb Village. Terada Tatsuya, who had long been estranged from the Terada family, returns as its successor. However, this return is the beginning of a tragedy. A hidden gem has arrived in the form of a stage play performed in tribute to a pair of Japan’s greatest stars. On the 35th anniversary of his becoming an entertainer Matsudaira Ken chose to honor his mentor, the legendary superstar Katsu Shintaro by portraying Zatoichi, the Blind Swordsman in a play based on the original film on the same stage that Katsu had played the role 40 years before in a stage presentation. Not pleased with the direction that Zatoichi’s image had been taken in some productions, he has breathed new life into the character by following the image that Katsu Shintaro had created for his signature role.

In this performance version, the title role will be played by Uchino, uncle Claudius and father's ghost will be played by Hayashi Kunimura, Ophelia will be played by Shihori Kanjiya, Gertrude will be played by Yuko Asano, and Horatio will be played by Yukiya Kitamura.
