Returning to Barcelona from schooling abroad in Italy, the young Francisco meets the beautiful young girl Rosalia at a ball and falls in love with her, but the two part without being able to exchange a word. One day, Francisco learns that his friend Raphael is back in town as well. The two go out to a taproom, and there Francisco asks Raphael's younger sister Monica to dance. In 20th century Paris, a farewell reception is being held after the a millionaire who had founded many enterprises. His will says that his eldest son George will succeed the count with the stipulation that he marry a woman of either blue blood or high society within half a year but Georges dreams of marrying and loving forever a woman destined to cross his path. He feels oppressed by the idea of getting married merely to fulfill his father's will. His friend tells George to go easy, advising him that marriage is one thing and love another. He then leads George to a revue theater he knows well. George, who gets drunk at the theater, remembers his father's advice in the will: Go to church when in distress. He heads for a church. However, on the way to the church, he falls down. At the moment he thinks in fading consciousness that he is freezing to death, he sees an angel.

Both vassals are killed by the enemy, but Shizu-Hime escapes. She wanders, destitute, for a short time and meets Shinbei. Shinbei at first takes her for a boy, and a thief, but shares his food with her. In the autumn of 1756, the Kuki clan is found in the mountainous fief of Sanda. It has been relocated from the seashore by the Tokugawa shogunate because of the clan's navy, known as the strongest during the age of civil wars and therefore regarded as a menace to the security of the new rulers. The lord of Sanda, Takamura Kuki, is determined to defend the fief as a land warrior, whereas Umihito Kuki, his younger brother, maintains the pride of a sea warrior and dreams of sailing out to unseen foreign lands notwithstanding the shogunate's isolation policy. Umihito is engaged to Princess Yu, a beautiful and lively daughter of the lord of Tanba-Ayabe fief. Although the match itself was made for the convenience of their families, they have known each other since childhood and are strongly bound by mutual respect and profound love.

Although the details are not certain yet, Fred announcs to everyone that the scripts Richard has written have already gotten him noticed by TV producers and he is being offered a job. As Richard's friends congratulate him, an old woman suddenly appears in the crowd.

He now works with Ray to kill corrupt politicians and other powerful men. However, he has a very nihilistic outlook, believing he has nothing to live for, no matter how much Ray argues with him.
