Biography

Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen released his first album in 1973, but it was his second album, The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle later that year that led a rock critic to call him "the future of rock'n'roll." A year later Springsteen released Born to Run to critical and popular success, and he was a bona fide rock star, nicknamed "The Boss." In the '80s he released The River to huge success, and his 1984 album, Born in the U.S.A. was on top of the charts for seven weeks. In the '...

The Paris Concert for Amnesty International

This production, mounted December 10, 1998, commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a milestone underscored with between-songs informational segments that succinctly promote the beneficiary's themes of tolerance and social responsibility. Filmed and live cameos mix celebrities with sage comments from the Dalai Lama (whose impish "thumbs up" to the crowd elevates the entire affair) and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. An underlying fervor also sparks much of the music, particularly from Peter Gabriel, Youssou N'Dour, Tracy Chapman, and a solo Bruce Springsteen, whose songs all allude to the human rights agenda. Alanis Morissette's brief set likewise takes on a spiritual glow consistent with both her second solo album and the context at hand, while jubilant sets from Kassav and the Asian Dub Foundation serve as potent multicultural celebrations.

Wings for Wheels: The Making of 'Born to Run'
8.2

What can be said about Born To Run that hasn't already been said or written over the years? The album took Springsteen from punk to rock star, from rags to riches, from boy to man, educating his crowd in lessons of love, broken dreams and cars. This documentary details the making of the album and covers everything from the pressure that Springsteen was working under to produce a hit album for Columbia Records to working with the band in the studio to achieve the sound he wanted for the album. Finally the "Hype" of Springsteen that threatened to overtake the value of the album and the artist is also discussed. Featuring vintage footage and new interviews, it's a marvelous glimpse into the creation of one of the top ten albums of all time. There are also three performances from 1973 recorded in Los Angeles-"Spirit in the Night" "Wild Billy's Circus Story" and "Thundercrack".

Bruce Springsteen: The Seeger Sessions Live at St. Luke's
7.0

BBC Four presents a special performance by Bruce Springsteen from LSO St Luke's in London's East End, an intimate backdrop for a superstar rocker more used to arena-sized venues. But fans of older works like Born to Run will find the venue switch dovetails nicely with a change in musical style. The Boss performs songs from his new album, We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions, which consists of folk standards and spirituals popularised by the American folk legend, Pete Seeger. According to the bbc.co.uk/music album review, it's 'a fine example of a contemporary artist taking great delight in collaborating with crack musicians and mining his country's songwriting past.' Set list: John Henry, Oh Mary Don't You Weep, How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?, Mrs McGrath, My Oklahoma Home, Jacob's Ladder, We Shall Overcome, Pay Me My Money Down.
