Jean Paul Gaultier: Freak & Chic

Inspired even as a boy by the Folies Bergere, the legendary Paris cabaret venue, couturier Jean-Paul Gaultier always wanted to stage a show there. "But what story can I tell?" he muses in this doc about the six months of preparation that went into the show. "Mine." Combining fashion with film, dance, theater, and unapologetic over-the-top-ness, the revue offers a 40-year career retrospective of the designer who is practically never spoken of without using the phrase enfant terrible. Notorious among cinephiles for his costumes for The Fifth Element and The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover and among pop fans for Madonna's pointy cone brassiere, he also incorporated teddy bears and S&M fetish gear as design motifs. In the show, the fanciful and outrageous meets the naughtily witty (a skit sending up Vogue dragon lady Anna Wintour) and the poignant (a tribute to his partner Francis Menuge, who died in 1990).

The Girlie Show World Tour (also referred to as simply The Girlie Show) was the fourth concert tour by American singer-songwriter Madonna, in support of her fifth studio album, Erotica. The tour visited the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia for the first time, selling 360 000 tickets in this leg only. Madonna's inspiration for the name of the tour was a painting called "Girlie Show" by Edward Hopper. The tour is estimated to have grossed over US$70 million. Two separate television specials were broadcast during the tour, one made during the Japanese leg of the tour and shown only on Japanese television; Madonna Live in Japan 1993 – The Girlie Show and an HBO special Madonna Live Down Under – The Girlie Show which was later released in 1994 by Warner Music Vision on home video.

With her legendary "Blond Ambition Tour" in 1990, Madonna once again shocked the world, simulating masturbation on stage, among other provocations. At the height of her fame, the star had also taken a stand for the rights of homosexuals, hard hit by AIDS and discrimination. The subject touched her personally: six of the seven dancers who surrounded her on stage at the time were gay. By tracing the careers of these artists before, during and after this memorable tour, this documentary sheds new light on the history of the LGBT community in the United States. Reunited for the first time twenty-five years later, these dancers tell their respective stories, between pride and the difficulty of coming out, and evoke their relationship with Madonna with a sometimes bittersweet nostalgia.
