During the British rule in India, several Indians were lured by the British to travel to distant Mauritius where they would have a better life. Upon reaching this island, the Indians were enslaved, tortured and made to labor in what is now known as the "Coolie Ghat". After the British left India, the Indians in Mauritius decided to continue to live there along with other nationals from different countries.

An engineer's dream of making the perfect train for Indian Railways is given hope when the company commissions his prototype. After years dedicating himself to his dream, his family has suffered, but now he hopes to make it all up to them with the train's triumphant inaugural journey. However, an embittered fellow employee has other ideas.

Collegian Ajay Sharma was born on 2nd April 1968 and lives in Bombay with his widowed mom, Asha. His journey takes him through periods of harsh asceticism, sensual pleasures, material wealth, self-revulsion and eventually to the oneness and harmony that he had been seeking. The story is based on the best-selling novel by German Nobel Prize winner Hermann Hesse.

Idealistic Ram's one ambition is to do something for his village. Rekha rich and young girl comes into his life who in spite of warnings, marries Ram and come to the village. Fed up with idling away her time, Rekha, in a huff, moves to the city and take job as tourist guide, only to discover that this life is too short, can be humdrum as the one in village.
