Teddy Duncan's middle-class family embarks on a road trip from their home in Denver to visit Mrs. Duncans Parents, the Blankenhoopers, in Palm Springs. When they find themselves stranded between Denver and Utah, they try to hitch a ride to Las Vegas with a seemingly normal older couple in a station wagon from Roswell, New Mexico. It turns out that the couple believes they are the victims of alien abduction. The Duncan's must resort to purchasing a clunker Yugo to get to Utah, have their luggage stolen in Las Vegas, and survive a zany Christmas with Grandpa and Grandma Blankenhooper.

Now in his 60s, Mikey vividly journeys back to his childhood during one of the best summers of his life when he met the girl of his dreams, Kelly, scored a spot on the travel baseball team, worked his first job and began his growth out of boyhood — all in the sudden wake of his father missing overseas on a military mission.

While battling her own demons, Detective Olson is determined to catch a sadistic killer. The only clues left behind are the victim's bloody remains and the sole survivor, a 17 year old boy. While they try to determine why the boy's family was targeted, the boy begins to question human nature, and the evil that could be lurking deep inside us all.
