A medical student (Frits Helmuth) earns money for tuition working in a burlesque joint. He falls for one of the girls (Malene Schwarz), but she is also involved with a movie director (John Price). The director and Helmuth get into a philosophical debate about love and Darwinism, and the film ends with a duel (the film's title). Duellen was met with mostly incomprehension when it premiered and is no more lucid when viewed today. The striptease scene featuring full-frontal nudity is tame by modern standards.

The von Ramborgs, a couple who own a big estate, are having some serious money issues. Their estate is run by a bunch of talented folks. The count's nephew Frantz shows up at the estate and immediately falls for Louise, who's the daughter of the estate manager. The maid Marie falls for Frantz, while the handyman Fritz is into Marie. In addition to these complications, two swindlers arrive at the estate. They want to try to cheat von Ramborg out of his estate. However, von Ramborg gets help from Marie and Havermann, who is the estate manager.

The small, diligent chorus girl Dolly Hansen is engaged at one of the city's big revue theaters, and one evening she has to step in and double for the prima donna who has called in sick. She is successful, and this gives her the courage to ask the director for a small salary increase. However, this is taken very unkindly, and such a heated discussion arises between them that the young girl suddenly finds herself in the street, fired on grey paper.
