Germany, 1946. Hunger, rubble, returning soldiers. Charlotte is pregnant, but her beloved returnee does not want her or his child. In order to win him over and escape the impending shame, she enrolls in the "missing course" of actress Gloria Deven, who was an up-and-coming film star under Fascism and is now banned from working. But Gloria, with her merciless lessons, is not interested in reviving the coquetry of girls that became superfluous in the war. Bente, a school dropout, was a foster child on the Strand family's remote farm. Forensic medicine finds a key in Bente's stomach. Where was the girl going with two cans of gasoline? Why did the local gas station attendant sell her gasoline even though it was known that she was an arsonist? Which lock does this key fit into? Local policeman Lars Klapproth might be able to contribute to solving the case, but he does not. Because Lars is the father of Maria's missing daughter Matilde. He had made the toddler disappear with the help of GDR state agencies during the reunification period. When Maria, who had fled the republic, returned to get her daughter shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Matilde had already been adopted and could not be found.

The new Federal Minister of the Interior and Community (Lena Dörrie) is used to mastering big challenges. But a murder at the Conference of Interior Ministers is something else. To make matters worse: The 16 interior ministers of the federal states (including Jan Böhmermann, Henny Reents, Christoph Zrenner) are of no help in clarifying the matter.
