Academy Award-honoree Peter O'Toole stars in this musical classic about a prim English schoolmaster who learns to show his compassion through the help of an outgoing showgirl. O'Toole, who received his fourth Oscar-nomination for this performance, is joined by '60s pop star Petula Clark and fellow Oscar-nominee Michael Redgrave.
Time is playing tricks on Mary. Around her the walls are crumbling- all the houses are being pulled down. Why does she insist on staying, caught in a dream about a family, years ago, out walking in the fields after the harvest? And who was Sarah, that beautiful young girl, whose sister couldn't bear that she was in love?
A talented, independent artist lives by the sea with her daughter. As summer approaches, she faces two threats to her way of life: the local doctor who is in love with her and her unhappy sister who comes to stay.
