Philippe Jaroussky as Ruggiero is in thrall to Patricia Petibon as the sorceress Alcina in Katie Mitchellâs virtuosic production of Handelâs opera from the 2015 Aix-en-Provence Festival, described by Bachtrack as âa night of a thousand delightsâ. Conducted by Andrea Marcon, this was, in the words of Opera News, âmusically ⊠a performance of the highest festival levelâ. The production of Alcina, by the British director Katie Mitchell, was welcomed by the Financial Times as âmeticulously executed âŠ, rich in detail, consummately polishedâ. As the New York Times wrote: âIt involves a huge sorcery machine for turning people into animals (or whatever). And Ms. Mitchell works magic of her own onstage, constantly showing the enchantresses Alcina and Morgana alternating between glamorous public personas and their âreal lifeâ, older, private selves âŠThere are also bits of simulated sex, mingling genders and suggesting, among other things, inventive new ways to hit high notes.â

Mozartâs Requiem â his final and unfinished masterpiece â is an extraordinary work. Discover the piece at the Salzburg Festival in the hands of conductor Teodor Currentzis, the ensemble musicAeterna, Anna Prohaska (soprano), Katharina Magiera (contralto), Mauro Peter (tenor), and Tareq Nazmi (bass). Few musical works are as steeped in legend as Mozartâs Requiem in D minor, K. 626. Commissioned anonymously by the eccentric count Franz von Walsegg, the funereal oeuvre would become Mozartâs last: when he died on December 5, 1791, only the Requiem aeternam and Kyrie movements were fully composed and orchestrated. Completed by other composers (Mozartâs student Franz Xaver SĂŒssmayer in particular) using Mozartâs sketches and notes, the resulting work weaves the emotions we associate with death into a timeless musical exploration of every human beingâs destiny, and constitutes a powerful final testament to its creatorâs genius.

That is why it is an obligation, indeed a must, to enjoy this Figaro by JĂŒrgen Flimm at the Staatsoper to the fullest.â (ARD Radio) This production of âLe nozze di Figaroâ is directed by the former artistic director of the Staatsoper Berlin, JĂŒrgen Flimm, who characterizes it as follows: âFigaro is by far the best work ever devised for the stage; it combines everything that moves the human heart and mind â forlorn hope, pleasantry, satire, profound significance, also much ado about nothing and vain amours.â
