Gioacchino Rossini's "William Tell". Wichita Grand Opera. February 22, 2014
With its enchanting setting and spellbinding score, the worldâs most popular opera is as timeless as it is heartbreaking. Franco Zeffirelliâs picture-perfect production brings 19th-century Paris to the Met stage as Pucciniâs young friends and lovers navigate the joy and struggle of bohemian life. Soprano Juliana Grigoryan is the feeble seamstress MimĂŹ, opposite tenor Freddie De Tommaso as the ardent poet Rodolfo.
Umberto Giordanoâs exhilarating drama returns to the Met repertory for the first time in 25 years. Packed with memorable melodies, showstopping arias, and explosive confrontations, Fedora requires a cast of thrilling voices to take flight, and the Metâs new production promises to deliver. Soprano Sonya Yoncheva, one of todayâs most riveting artists, sings the title role of the 19th-century Russian princess who falls in love with her fiancĂŠâs murderer, Count Loris, sung by star tenor Piotr BeczaĹa. Soprano Rosa Feola is the Countess Olga, Fedoraâs confidante, and baritone Artur RuciĹski is the diplomat De Siriex, with much-loved Met maestro Marco Armiliato conducting. Director David McVicar delivers a detailed and dramatic staging based around an ingenious fixed set that, like a Russian nesting doll, unfolds to reveal the operaâs three distinctive settingsâa palace in St. Petersburg, a fashionable Parisian salon, and a picturesque villa in the Swiss Alps.
Director David McVicarâs new production brings operaâs favorite double bill to new life, setting the two operas in the same Sicilian setting, separated by two generations. Marcelo Ălvarez takes on the rare feat of singing both leading tenor roles. In Cavalleria, he is Turiddu, the young man who abandons Santuzza (Eva-Maria Westbroek) in his pursuit of the married Lola (Ginger Costa-Jackson)âand ends up being killed in a duel with her husband, Alfio (George Gagnidze). In Pagliacci, Ălvarez is Canio, the leader of a traveling vaudeville troupe. Patricia Racette sings Nedda, his unfaithful young wife, whose plans to run away with her lover are foiled by her spurned admirer Tonio (George Gagnidze)âwith equally tragic consequences. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi is on the podium.
The Royal Opera, the Royal Ballet, and director-choreographer Wayne McGregor bring us an interpretation of DIDO AND AENEAS, an opera composed by Henry Purcell, with a libretto by Nahum Tate; based on Book IV of Virgil's Aeneid. We find Dido in her court with her attendants. Dido fears that her love for Aeneas will make her a weak monarch, but her attendants assure her that heroes, too, love....
A young student, Ernesto, who lives with his old bachelor uncle, Don Pasquale, has refused to wed the woman of his uncleâs choosing because he is in love with a young widow, Norina. Pasquale has decided to punish Ernesto by getting married and fathering an heir, thereby cutting off his nephew without a penny. Dr. Malatesta, a friend of Pasquale as well as Ernesto and Norina, has devised a plan to both save Pasquale from his folly and help the young couple.
