This majestic production of Handel's vivid tragedy, TAMERLANO, stars a Lear-like Placido Domingo as the Turkish Sultan Bajazet, caught between pride, love, and loyalty. Displaying the uniquely heroic quality of his voice, Domingo heads a superb cast, including Sara Mingardo, Monica Bacelli, and Ingela Bohlin, all magnificently responsive to Paul McCreesh's authentic and luminous musical interpretation of the score. The stunning theatrical staging by Graham Vick provides a splendid setting for the characters and for designer Richard Hudson's extravagant Baroque-Islamic costumes, emphasizing the brilliance of one of Handel's finest dramatic achievements.
Mozart’s Don Giovanni returned to Teatro alla Scala in October 2006 in a new production directed by Peter Mussbach, who also designed the sets, with Gustavo Dudamel conducting the orchestra and chorus. Blending psychological intensity with stark, contemporary theatrical imagery, the staging explores the darker dimensions of Mozart’s drama of seduction, power and moral reckoning. Carlos Álvarez stars as the defiant libertine, with Ildebrando D’Arcangelo as his resourceful servant Leporello, alongside Anna Samuil as Donna Anna, Francesco Meli as Don Ottavio and Monica Bacelli as Donna Elvira. A co-production with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, this interpretation brings fresh dramatic tension to the timeless story of a man who refuses to face the consequences of his actions.
Handel's 1724 opera Tamerlano followed the success of his previous year's Giulio Cesare with another colourful historical costume drama. This time the setting is the court of "Timur the Tartar", who has just defeated the Turkish Sultan Bajazet at the battle of Angora. There are, naturally enough, romantic complications when both Tamerlano and his ally, the Greek Prince Andronico, fall in love with Bajazet's daughter Asteria. She, however, has plans to revenge her father's defeat. This production was directed by Jonathan Miller and staged in the intimate surroundings of the Goethe Theatre of Bad Lauchstadt as part of the 2001 Halle Handel Festival.
For the festivities marking the Pergolesi's tercentenary in his native Jesi, Ignacio García created a new staging of the imperial drama Adriano in Siria. His staging in Jesi's exquisite 18th-century Teatro Comunale Pergolesi includes the delightful comic intermezzo Livietta e Tracollo, thus following the precedent set at the premiere in 1734. A fine Italian cast and the distinguished Accademia Bizantina are led by the Accademia's director, Ottavio Dantone. Contains the intermezzo Livietta e Tracollo.

co-production with the Teatro Real (Madrid).
Esteemed Italian conductor Gianluigi Gelmetti leads the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra in a moving performance of Rossini's one-act opera "L'Occasione Fa Il Ladro." Singers Susan Patterson, Robert Gambill, Natale de Carolis and Monica Bacelli fill the theater with their soaring voices in this 1992 production staged by director Michael Hampe at the elegantly cozy Rococo Theatre, in the quaint town of Schwetzingen, Germany.
The production bears the imprint of the conductor, Marko Letonja, and the director, Tobias Richter, whose understanding is ideal: both breathe a troupe spirit - specific to comedy - into this heterogeneous cast, which brings together young and old. Both give as much importance to recitatives as to arias and ensembles.
In an apparent idyll high in the Swiss Alps, a secluded village society prepares for the next wedding. Amina is to be the lucky one this time. The groom Elvino, however, soon turns his attention back to his former wife because Amina sleepwalks into the bed of a stranger who has just arrived. Full-length performance of the opera recorded live at the Rossini opera festival in 1995.
