As a photographer, Colita is an undisputed master of the portrait of 20th-century Barcelona. In her garden, she sips tea with her friends, all of them very important women: writers, singers and actresses filled with wit and exuberance. Together, they revisit their memories of intensely lived years: the last two decades of the Franco dictatorship. Just enough to complete the image through the lens of her camera. There is no distance in her art.
In the 1960s, a young Spanish flamenco dancer named Antonia Singla captivated audiences with her strikingly passionate performances. Having lost her hearing at a young age, La Singla rose to fame with her commanding presence through a combination of her powerful gaze and thunderous movement. However, just at the height of her fame, she seemingly disappeared and decades later has been all but forgotten. When a young woman in Seville comes across La Singla’s story, a bigger picture starts to be unveiled. Through research, interviews and captivating archival footage, she starts to piece together the legend of La Singla. Through the beauty of her performances and the heartbreak of her story, La Singla celebrates and preserves the legacy of one of the greatest Flamenco dancers of all time.
Colita was the eye of her time. Her photographs capture the society taking shape in Spain from the 1960s through the Transition and into the 1980s and 1990s, when a country long repressed and silenced began to awaken. “I want to be there,” she said, and devoted herself to photojournalism. She brought the same vision to her many passions: flamenco, portraiture, film stills, Barcelona, her beloved city, and animals. *Colita Without Filters* centres on the making of the exhibition *Antifémina* at Madrid’s Círculo de Bellas Artes. It was the last exhibition she saw in progress, but she died on 31 December 2023, before its opening. Her close friend and confidant Francesc Polop, director of the Colita Photography Archive, carried the project forward with her team. The exhibition offers a powerful thread through portraits of women too often overlooked: elderly women and girls, Roma women and models.
An account of the life and work of the charismatic Spanish writer Terenci Moix (1942-2003).
