Guus Hiddink

On Nov 16, 2005, Australia didn't just qualify for the FIFA World Cup, it found its voice on the global stage. We hear from the players, coaches and fans who were part of that historic moment.

After 32 years of heartache, bitterness and despair, it took just seconds for Guus Hiddink to exude a rare sense of calmness in the Socceroos dressing room. Four years prior to the now famous night on November 16, 2005, a fragile Australian team had been bullied off the park by Uruguay in its quest to finally break its World Cup drought. Intimidated from the moment they touched down in Montevideo in 2001, spat on by locals and then roared off the park by 60,000 manic fans in the Estadio Centenario, they had barely stood a chance. Now older, more mature and — with Hiddink in charge — more professional, things would be different four years on. That change in mentality flows through November 16, a gripping documentary from Richard Bayliss and Ben Coonan that depicts the Socceroos’ journey from West Germany in 1974 to the moment John Aloisi’s crisp spot kick struck the back of Fabian Carini’s net.

The 2008/09 season will go down as one of the most dramatic and exciting in Chelsea FC's long and illustrious history. A mid-season change of manager, a devastating departure from the Champions League and a famous victory in The FA Cup Final are just some of the moments to remember. After a scintillating start to the season which saw the Blues undefeated until late October hopes were high that the club could reclaim the Premier League crown and secure an elusive first Champions League title. But a slump in form and fortune saw the club's title aspirations disappear along with manager Luiz Felipe Scolari. The arrival of Guus Hiddink energised the team and revived ambitions of securing a trophy but with the Premier League just out of reach and hearts broken in the Champions League, their perseverance was rewarded with a fantastic win at Wembley in The FA Cup Final ensuring another season of silverware for the mighty Blues.

It was another season full of drama at Stamford Bridge, and although it didn't all go our way there were plenty of memories to savour. Whether it was Willian's set-piece perfection or Eden Hazard's late flurry of goals, the Blues provided glorious moments during a challenging campaign. Once again, London rivals Arsenal were beaten home and away while the second-half comeback against Tottenham will live long in the memory of any Chelsea fan. Additionally, further breakthroughs from a host of youngsters offered Blues fans glimpses of a bright future.
