The Heritage

Árpi (known to his sons simply as “Boss”) has been living alone for years after losing his wife, with whom he spent more than fifty years. In recent months, Árpi has spent practically all of his savings. His two sons, Attila and Kristóf, only realize this when the old man’s electricity is cut off due to his accumulated debt. This is more than strange for the elderly man, who lives a modest life, but he refuses to say a word about where the one and a half million forints went. Attila and Kristóf work together to coax the truth out of him: he gave the money to Hajnalka, a young woman with a difficult past. But who is this Hajnalka, whom they’ve never heard of before? The old man claims he’s in love. The boys claim the old man is being taken advantage of. Everyone clings to their own version of the truth. But the truth must be uncovered. The longest night of their lives begins. And even Hajnalka appears at the front door.

Where Were You, My Son?

Set in a large apartment in Hungary during the death throes of communism, obedient Andor lives with his eccentric mother, Rebeka, a once-celebrated stage actress-turned-recluse. After years of coexisting in a love-hate relationship marked by routine and possible incest, Andor brings home Eszter, a beautiful girl his own age. Her advances awaken Andor's repressed desires, the depths of which prove shocking. Opera director Robert Alfoldi renders this bizarre story in a melodramatic style, and veteran Hungarian stage star Dorottya Udvaros rises to the occasion. If you can imagine the intersecting area on a Venn diagram that includes Taxidermia and Sunset Blvd., that's where Where Were You, My Son? was born. The original title, Nyugalom, which translates to Tranquility, is ironic to say the least. ...over the-top...memorable...thunderous...sex and violins (Variety).

"What can happen between a man and a woman? Everything. Anything. Anything from passion to indifference. Can you sum it all up in one concert? Yes. At least, that's what four excellent actors (two women and two men) and an excellent score are trying to do. The lyrics are not the least of it." Passing through, Listen a little! Two albums from the 80s, both legends since then. Dorottya Udvaros sings about Hóesés, The Vainly Beautiful Girl, Stripping, passionate duets by Juli Båsti and György Cserhalmi, like Jåtszótårsak or Ten Little Scapegoats. These songs have rarely or never been performed in concert. Jånos Kulka has also sung Dés songs on record. After more than twenty years, the Big Team is finally getting together and will present this special performance on a national concert tour, with musical direction by Låszló Dés and direction by Géza Bereményi. The composer duo Dés-Bereményi have also written new songs for the four actors for the occasion.

A new National Theatre is built, and the director hires a famous Danish director for the premiere performance. The actors rehearse, the tractor and the construction workers work on the almost finished building. Everything seems to be on track, including the train, unfortunately, on the siding of the bridge next to the theatre. It's a little too loud and it's echoing into the main hall, so rehearsals are squeezed into a room that isn't very big. Bridge cushions are coming, even though it's cold and a bit like Christmas, but most importantly, the art is happening and the lead actress is indeed a queen. She falls in love with her partner and destroys him at the end of the performance. The role takes shape, only sometimes it is eerily similar to the real life of the artists. Will they live to see the premiere?

A prominent conductor's nervous breakdown leads to love in this thoughtful Hungarian romantic drama. For sometime, Landos, a noted conductor, has suffered anxiety and a lack of confidence about his work. The problem is made worse by his wife's successful dental practice. Eventually it becomes too overwhelming and the conductor is sent to a mental hospital for rest. There he encounters clinical psychologist Andrea Novak. At first she seems colder than alpine snow, but when he sneaks out to return to work and she finds him there, things quickly turn hot. The two become engulfed in passion that they ignore their own spouses and professions, causing Novak to be formally reprimanded. Eventually Landos finds himself forced to choose between his wife and Novak. Unfortunately, he loves them both. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
