The film takes place in Turkmenistan during the Second World War. Here, at a small railway siding, chance brings together Zina, whose husband disappeared at the front, Nadya from besieged Leningrad, and locomotive depot driver Andrei, who dreams of the front and the front line. The driver, having fallen in love with Zina, immediately proposes to her. But Zina does not consider herself a widow - and refuses her beloved. After which - to spite the whole world - the hero marries the silent Nadya and soon receives an assignment to the front. While accompanying a train with fuel, Andrei dies during the bombing of a railway junction, never having been to the front.

A secret unit to combat aliens has been operating since the Second World War, as we learn from newsreels. The action is transferred to New Year's Eve, 1998, to the Gorky Film Studio, where the New Year's program is being filmed. Among the filmmakers, in addition to the mummers, there was also one real Santa Claus, who has been fulfilling one wish once a year for 2 million years. Three guards, a girl from a variety show, a revived dummy and a mischievous boy fought off the international anti-alien forces and tried to come up with this one desire, but they could not. And when Santa Claus disappeared (his time was up) everyone found a gift in the bag that perfectly matched their wishes.

Gorky's play raises themes of the Russian intelligentsia's struggles and search for the meaning of life. The characters argue a lot, quarrel, tease each other, trying to change, if not their lives, then at least their outlook on it.
